Head coach Mack Brown and the UNC football program welcomed two new additions to its Class of 2022 over the weekend, in three-star linebacker Deuce Caldwell and three-star offensive tackle Justin Kanyuk.

Caldwell — who stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 210 pounds and has played as a safety for Mauldin High School in South Carolina –committed to the Tar Heels on Friday a week after his official visit to campus.

He becomes the fourth defensive player to join UNC’s Class of 2022, alongside four-star cornerback Tayon Holloway and four-star edge rushers Malaki Hamrick and Beau Atkinson. According to 24/7 Sports, Caldwell is the No. 17 ranked player in South Carolina and the No. 98 ranked player at his position in the country.

Much of Caldwell’s family resides in Asheville and he has a UNC connection already in the form of former UNC men’s basketball national champion Theo Pinson.

He chose the Tar Heels over offers from Arkansas, Baylor, Central Florida, Duke, Minnesota, Ole Miss, South Florida, and West Virginia.

Kanyuk, meanwhile, committed to the Tar Heels on Sunday before the end of his official visit. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound tackle from Bethlehem Catholic High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania also had offers from Brown, Charlotte, Columbia and Illinois State.

He is ranked as the No. 77 offensive tackle in the nation and the No. 19 overall player in Pennsylvania by 24/7 Sports.

Kanyuk becomes the second three-star offensive tackle in the Tar Heels’ Class of 2022, joining Trevyon Green.
