Mack Brown has yet another massive win on the recruiting trail. Four-star running back and longtime UNC target George Pettaway committed to Brown and the Tar Heels Wednesday night, adding another piece to Carolina’s loaded 2022 recruiting class. He chose Carolina over finalists Penn State, Florida and Oregon.

Pettaway, from Suffolk, VA, is ranked as the No. 7 running back in the country and the No. 98 player overall by 247 Sports. The website described Pettaway as an “electric runner with insane production,” and an “immediate impact player at [an] elite level college program.” In four spring games for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in 2021, Pettaway averaged 13.7 yards per carry. With the commitment, Carolina’s class moves up to No. 12 in the country.

Pettaway will join a UNC running backs group in 2022 that loses graduate transfer Ty Chandler but will still have the talented Caleb Hood in the fold, as well as four-star recruit Omarion Hampton.

Pettaway is the eighth four-star prospect to join UNC’s 2022 recruiting class, and the second-highest-ranked prospect in the class behind five-star defensive lineman Travis Shaw. Pettaway also represents the fifth recruit from the state of Virginia to join the class. Current UNC cornerback Tony Grimes played just 30 miles down the road from Pettaway at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, VA.

The biggest remaining target in Carolina’s 2022 class is five-star offensive lineman Zach Rice, who is from Lynchburg, VA. Rice is ranked as the No. 1 offensive lineman and No. 7 overall player in the country, and lists Carolina in his group of finalists along with Virginia, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Alabama. Rice attended the Tar Heels’ 59-39 win over Virginia on September 18. He has not listed a date for his commitment.
