UNC freshman running back Caleb Hood has impressed his coaches this offseason, and now others are taking notice. The college sports publication On3 named Hood to their preseason true freshman All-American team on Thursday, with Hood in the “all-purpose” position.

Hood starred at quarterback while playing for Richmond High School in Rockingham, N.C., but has since transitioned to running back to help a thin area of Carolina’s roster. He signed with UNC as the No. 49 player at his position.

Head coach Mack Brown has indicated that Hood is the No. 2 option in the backfield behind graduate transfer Ty Chandler. “Every practice with [Hood], we get more impressed,” Brown told reporters in August.

Hood’s father, Errol, was recruited by Brown during Brown’s first stint in Chapel Hill, though Errol Hood arrived at Carolina in 1998, after Brown’s departure for Texas.

On3 noted Hood’s skills as a receiver and his “good athletic profile.” Hood is the second freshman on the football team to receive preseason honors, as defensive lineman Jahvaree Ritzie was previously named to 247 Sports’ preseason true freshman All-American team.

Hood, Ritzie and the Tar Heels will kick off their season Friday, September 3 at 6 p.m. against Virginia Tech. You can listen to that game on 97.9 FM or 1360 AM.
