By finishing in second place on Saturday in the 400-meter hurdles at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Oregon, former UNC star and ACC champion Kenny Selmon will represent the country in the upcoming Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Selmon’s time of 48.08 seconds on Saturday was his personal best, and gives him a spot on the Olympic team alongside first-place finisher Rai Benjamin — whose time of 46.83 is the second-fastest ever recorded — and third-place finisher David Kendziera (48.38).
While at UNC from 2014-18, Selmon was a four-time All-American and three-time ACC champion. His best time in the 400-meter hurdles as a Tar Heel was 48.60, which came during a fourth-place finish at the 2017 NCAA Finals and broke what had been a 22-year old school record.
The opening ceremonies for the Tokyo Olympics are scheduled to take place on Friday, July 23 — with the 400-meter hurdle event beginning on Saturday, July 31.
