UNC freshman cornerback Tony Grimes was one of six players highlighted by the Associated Press earlier this week as the top NCAA true freshmen to watch for this upcoming college football season.

Grimes–a native of Virginia Beach–was originally slated to be the crown jewel of UNC’s Class of 2021, but he recently re-classified in order to join the Tar Heels for this upcoming season.

He was rated by 24/7 Sports as a five-star prospect, the No. 1 cornerback in the nation and the No. 7 player regardless of position.

Although the Tar Heels do have a number of talented players returning in the secondary, Grimes is still expected to make an immediate impact.

The other players highlighted by the AP as true freshmen to watch are: Clemson defensive tackle Bryan Bresee, TCU running back Zach Evans, LSU tight end Arik Gilbert, Miami running back Jaylan Knighton and Notre Dame running back Chris Tyree.

Grimes and the Tar Heels are set to begin their season on Saturday at Kenan Stadium against Syracuse.
