It took a few innings for things to get rolling on Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium, but the No. 4 UNC baseball team came from behind to defeat the Richmond Spiders by a score of 6-2.

The Tar Heels (33-13) have now won nine straight games and continue to make their case as one of the premier teams in America right now.

Sophomore Ashton McGee’s RBI infield single in the bottom of the first inning gave UNC an early lead, but Richmond (24-21) responded with runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 2-1 lead midway through the game.

UNC finally took the lead for good in the home half of the sixth. Third baseman Kyle Datres hit a grounder with the bases loaded, which ultimately scored two runs when Richmond’s throw to second base ended up in the outfield instead.

A similar situation presented itself in the very next inning, when Dallas Tessar came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a ball that went right through the legs of Richmond third baseman Justin Cook. Again, two Tar Heels would score–giving the home side a 5-2 lead.

Jackson Hesterlee’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning would go on to represent the final run of the evening, helping give the Tar Heels extra insurance down the stretch.
