The Davey O’Brien Foundation announced Tuesday that UNC sophomore quarterback Sam Howell is among 30 players named to this year’s Davey O’Brien Award watch list.
The award is the oldest and most prestigious honor for quarterbacks, and is presented annually to the top quarterback in college football.
Howell broke onto the scene in a big way for the Tar Heels in 2019, setting a new FBS record for a true freshman with 38 touchdown passes. He was also second in the ACC with 3,641 passing yards and managed to throw for at least two scores in all 13 of UNC’s games.
With nearly all of his top offensive weapons returning for 2020, expectations are sky high for Howell as he prepares for his second year behind center for head coach Mack Brown.
The 2020 Davey O’Brien Award winner will be revealed on Thursday, Dec. 10 as part of ESPN’s College Football Awards ceremony.
