UNC quarterback Sam Howell earned himself yet another award on Thursday, when The Athletic named him a First Team All-Freshman selection for his outstanding performance thus far through the 2019 season.
The ACC Rookie of the Year broke the all-time FBS record for touchdown passes by a true freshman with 35 through UNC’s first 12 games, while also throwing for an ACC-high 3,347 yards to this point.
On top of that, Howell has thrown only seven interceptions and boasts numbers similar to Heisman Trophy candidates Joe Burrow of LSU and Justin Fields of Ohio State.
With one game remaining this year–the Military Bowl against Temple on Dec. 27–Howell has already broken Mitchell Trubisky’s school record for touchdown passes in a season, and has a chance to break Trubisky’s yardage record as well. For what it’s worth, Trubisky started only one season for UNC before being drafted second overall by the Chicago Bears in the 2017 NFL Draft.
