For the second consecutive night, the UNC baseball program notched a win in their super regional series — and for the second consecutive night, fans turned to social media in jubilation over the Diamond Heels.

Carolina escaped a bases-loaded ninth-inning jam to beat West Virginia 2-1 on Saturday, clinching UNC the series after their dramatic win on Friday night.

Online, the victory led to tons of celebration from Tar Heel fans — as the Carolina program will now return to Omaha, Nebraska to play in the College World Series for the first time since 2018.

All kinds of members of the Carolina Athletics community joined in on posting their congratulations to the Diamond Heels, including athletics director Bubba Cunningham, football head coach Mack Brown, women’s basketball head coach Courtney Banghart, and national title-winning diver Aranza Vazquez Montaño.

While the on-field interactions were cordial between the two teams on Saturday, some UNC fans had fun at West Virginia’s expense after the final out — chiefly using one popular John Denver tune.

The game started off with a bang, as Carolina’s star centerfielder Vance Honeycutt began Saturday where he left off on Friday. The first pitch the junior saw, he sent over the left field fence — just as he did when walking off the Diamond Heels in their opening win against West Virginia. That sent UNC social media into a tizzy from the get-go — which was matched by the end-of-game relief as Carolina held onto its lead.

The Carolina baseball program will now prepare to travel to Nebraska. Games in the College World Series double-elimination round will begin on Friday, June 14.
