The UNC baseball team rallied from a six-run deficit for the second straight game on Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium, but once again was unable to finish the job as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish completed a three-game sweep over the Tar Heels with a 14-8 victory in the series finale.

Notre Dame (10-2, 3-0 ACC) jumped out to a 7-1 lead through the first two and a half innings, but the Tar Heels (10-7, 0-3 ACC) responded with a solo home run from Aaron Sabato in their half of the third inning and five more runs in the fourth to tie things up at 7-7.

From there, however, the Fighting Irish tacked on three runs in both the fifth and eighth innings while also adding another in the seventh to retake a big cushion on the scoreboard.

The Tar Heels scored only once more after their early comeback, courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Angel Zarate–who extended his hitting streak to nine games and reached base for the 17th consecutive game.

“We got beat three times this weekend by a team that is playing at a really high level,” UNC head coach Mike Fox said afterwards. “They were hitting everything that we threw at them. It was an incredibly disappointing weekend but that is baseball. It happens to everyone and we cannot let it define us. We will get back to work tomorrow to get ready for our midweek games and we will respond the right way.”
