A top-10 wrestling showdown on Friday at Carmichael Arena saw eighth-ranked UNC pull off a 22-14 victory over the No. 9 Pittsburgh Panthers.

Austin O’Connor earned a pinfall victory at 149 pounds, while Kennedy Monday picked up an upset win over 12th-ranked Jake Wentzel at 165 pounds to help lead the Tar Heels to the win–improving the team’s record to 12-2 this season with a 3-1 mark inside the ACC.

UNC won six of the night’s 10 individual matches in total, as Joey Melendez (125 pounds), Zach Sherman (141), A.C. Headlee (157) and Clay Lautt (174) also won their respective bouts.

Lautt won his by major decision by outscoring Pitt’s Hunter Kernan 15-5.

Pittsburgh won each of the final three matches at the heavier weight classes, but it was too little, too late as the Tar Heels had already built an insurmountable lead by that point.
