As the UNC Wrestling program prepares for its first year under a new head coach, its schedule for the 2023-24 season was revealed this week.

Carolina, which finished 6-9 in team duals last season, will host seven events in Carmichael Arena this winter before Chapel Hill plays host for the ACC Championship on March 10. Based on preseason rankings, the Tar Heels are set to face seven top-25 opponents throughout their schedule.

Wrestling will begin by hosting the Carolina Duals event on Thursday, November 2 — as Greensboro College, Queens University and Oregon State all come to Chapel Hill to compete with UNC. It will be the only time to catch Carolina Wrestling in November, as the Tar Heels are set to travel to the WrangleMania matchups in Pennsylvania to face Buffalo and Arizona State before then traveling to Illinois for matchups against the Fighting Illini and Central Michigan.

December will start with a trip to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in Nevada — where UNC is one of 32 teams set to compete — and will end at the Soldier Salute showcase in Iowa City. In between, Carolina will host Morgan State on Saturday, December 15 before traveling to Boone to match up again with Appalachian State the following day. UNC hosted the Mountaineers in 2022-23 and lost 19-16.

The Tar Heels will also have a chance to face several Ivy League teams that their new head coach has much experience facing. Rob Koll, who arrives at the program after 28 years of coaching Cornell and two years of coaching Stanford, will see his wrestlers again match up with Penn, Harvard, and Brown. Carolina faced all three teams last season on the road, beating Harvard and Brown.

ACC play for the Tar Heels begins on Friday, January 26 with a road match to face Virginia Tech. After a home date with Navy on Sunday, January 28, Carolina will face four conference opponents in February to close out the regular season. UNC will travel to face N.C. State on Friday, February 2, host Pittsburgh on Friday, February 9, hit the road to face Virginia on Friday, February 16, and return to Chapel Hill to wrestle Duke on Friday, February 23.

Koll, who won a national title as a wrestler with Carolina in the 1980s, was hired in August to lead the Tar Heels after previous head coach Coleman Scott left for a job at Oklahoma State. Having won several league and national coach of the year recognitions, he’s coached ten national champion collegiate wrestlers in his career.

Three members of the 2023-24 UNC roster have already earned some preseason recognition. Redshirt sophomore Lachlan McNeil was ranked fourth nationally in the 141-pound weight class, junior Gavin Kane was projected as sixth in the 184-pound weight class, and redshirt junior Max Shaw begins the season ranked as No. 19 in the 197-pound weight class by InterMat Wrestling. As a team, the national outlet ranks UNC as No. 26 coming into the season.
