The No. 2 ranked UNC men’s tennis team kicked off its run in the ITA National Indoor Tournament on Friday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over No. 7 Tennessee.
After fighting off four match points, the duo of Mac Kiger and Simon Soendergaard came through to clinch the doubles point for the Tar Heels with a 7-6 (5) victory.
Tennessee tied the score with a singles win on Court Two, but UNC responded with three consecutive singles victories by Soendergaard (6-2, 6-3), Brian Cernoch (6-4, 6-4) and Benjamin Sigouin to seal the deal.
This marks the fifth ITA National Indoor semifinal appearance in the last six seasons for the Tar Heels, who are competing this year in Champaign, Illinois.
