Sophomore Erin Matson scored both of her two goals in the first half on Sunday in Chapel Hill to lead the top-ranked UNC field hockey team to a 4-1 victory over the Appalachian State Mountaineers.

The win extends UNC’s winning streak to 30 games including last year’s 23-0 run to the national title, setting a new school record. This year’s Tar Heels are now 7-0.

Matson scored just over two minutes into the game to give UNC the lead, but Appalachian State (6-2) needed less than two minutes to tie things up with a goal by Veerle Van Heertum.

The teams were tied for the next 18 minutes, until Matson’s second goal gave the Tar Heels the lead for good.

In the second half, head coach Karen Shelton’s team received a pair of insurance scores from Megan DuVernois and Riley Fulmer to give the game its final score.

It was a dominant display by the Tar Heels despite not getting the shutout, as they racked up 27 shots compared to just two for the Mountaineers–avenging the school’s football loss to Appalachian State on Saturday.

“We’re happy with this one,” Shelton said afterwards. “I thought we passed the ball very well.  Appalachian State defended us incredibly well – their goalkeeper was on fire and they had three defensive saves, but it didn’t rattle our team. We kept working hard and creating opportunities. This is the kind of game that makes us better.”
