The fifth-ranked UNC men’s soccer team used a pair of late goals–including a game-winner in the 109th minute from Milo Garvanian–to win its ACC opener 2-1 against the Pittsburgh Panthers on Saturday night at Koskinen Stadium in Durham.

Garvanian’s double-overtime heroics came not long after Mauricio Pineda scored in the 73rd minute for the Tar Heels (4-1) to tie things up at 1-1, completing a successful comeback attempt for the home side.

Pitt (1-3) had previously taken the lead in the 13th minute on a goal from Edward Kizza, putting UNC behind in the first half for the first time all season long.

Tar Heel goalie James Pyle also made a critical save in the 89th minute that helped send the game to overtime, and keep his team’s chances of winning alive.

UNC finished the game with 11 total shots compared to just seven for Pitt.
