According to a report published on Thursday by Inside Carolina’s Greg Barnes, Mack Brown and the UNC football team have decided to part ways with special teams coordinator Scott Boone.

With Boone–who was also the Tar Heels’ outside linebackers coach–in charge, UNC ranked in the bottom half of the ACC standings in a number of different special teams categories. This includes kickoff returns, touchback percentage, punt coverage, kickoff coverage, field goals, punts and punt returns.

Most notably, UNC lost in six overtimes against Virginia Tech back on Oct. 19 in a game where kicker Noah Ruggles missed multiple attempts that would have given the team a victory. A decision to start backup Jonathan Kim at home the next week against Duke was then made, before returning to Ruggles following a miss by Kim on his first attempt–which came from 52 yards out.

Prior to joining the Tar Heels last January, Boone was an offensive analyst at Wake Forest. In a coaching career spanning four decades, he has also had stints at Arizona, Nevada and William & Mary.
