A header from Fillipo Zattarin found the back of the net with just one second remaining on Friday night at Dorrance Field, lifting the UNC men’s soccer team to a stunning 1-0 upset win over the No. 3 Clemson Tigers.

The play started on a free kick by Milo Garvinian with five seconds left, when the ball was sent into a group of players and redirected into the air by UNC’s Akiem Clarke. Zattarin then came running in and used his head to send the ball into the upper right corner just before the buzzer sounded.

“I usually don’t go up to jump for set pieces, because I’m not that tall,” Zattarin said afterwards. “But because of how little time was left I decided to go. I knew I had to jump before everyone else, so that’s what I did. Luckily, the goal went in with zero seconds to go, so that was great.”

UNC moved to 2-0 to begin the season with the win, while Clemson fell to 2-1 with the loss. It was the first time the Tigers were held scoreless since a 0-0 tie in Oct. 2019.

The Tar Heels racked up 11 shots in the match, narrowly edging Clemson’s total of 10.
