Seeking a second national title in three seasons, the No. 3 seed UNC women’s lacrosse team saw its dream come to an end Friday afternoon in Stony Brook, New York–as the Tar Heels were defeated by the James Madison Dukes 15-12 in the NCAA Tournament Semifinals.
It marked the second time this year that UNC lost to James Madison (21-1), as the Dukes came out on top 15-14 in double overtime back on Feb. 10 in the season opener for both teams.
In this game, however, overtime was not necessary. James Madison raced out to a 3-0 lead and never trailed at any point–snapping what had been an 11-match win streak for the Tar Heels (17-4).
Senior midfielder Marie McCool led UNC with two goals and four assists in her final college game, while Jamie Ortega added four goals and Kara Klages chipped in three of her own.
James Madison’s Haley Warden ended up with a game-high five goals to spearhead the winning effort.
