UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham shared a message with the Carolina community on Thursday detailing how the university will distribute men’s and women’s basketball tickets this season.

“We know many of you hope to be able to cheer them on in person; however, similar to our football ticket sales plan, we are preparing for multiple scenarios,” said Cunningham.

North Carolina is currently allowing for large-capacity outdoor stadiums to have up to 7 percent capacity for sports events (UNC football is allowing 3,500 fans at Kenan Stadium). There has been no update about the capacity at indoor venues. Cunningham said the fan capacity at the Dean Smith Center and Carmichael Arena will be reduced to comply with state executive orders regarding large gatherings if an update from Governor Roy Cooper is given.

Similar to procedures with football, priority will be given to families of student-athletes and coaches at venues. From there, UNC students, Rams Club members, faculty and corporate sponsors will also be considered. At this time, UNC is not making football tickets available to the general public.

Likewise, basketball season tickets will not be made available this season. An online request system will be used to offer ticket opportunities for the 2020-21 season. In his message, Cunningham said more information on how to request tickets will be given as soon as the university received capacity guidance for its indoor venues.

Finally, tickets will be distributed digitally this season to offer contact-free entry into venues.

“We are disappointed that we may not be able to see all of you at the Smith Center and Carmichael Arena, but the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and you – our dedicated Carolina community – remains our top priority,” Cunningham said. “We will be in touch as soon as we can with updates and additional opportunities to support our teams in creative ways.”

UNC men’s basketball opens its season on November 25 against the College of Charleston. The schedule for UNC women’s basketball has not been released.
