Motorists using Interstate 40 overnight Thursday can expect to see some temporary lane closures along a stretch in Orange County.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation recently shared a release saying sections of the interstate between the junction with Interstate 85 and the U.S. 15-501 interchange in Durham be reduced to one lane in either direction.

According to the department, which said the closures also occurred on Wednesday night, the traffic pattern change is due to concrete pavement testing be done ahead of a future project to widen I-40 to six lanes. A similar closure in the area is also planned for next Wednesday and Thursday nights.

The Department of Transportation said motorists can expect the lane closures to last from 8 p.m. through 6 a.m. on such nights. Drivers should travel with slower speeds when in the area of lane reduction, with the department urging them to be mindful of crews working near the travel lanes along the stretches of Interstate 40.
