With Wednesday marking the conclusion of the three-day marathon that is the MLB Draft, two more Tar Heels heard their names called in the late rounds–giving UNC a total of five players drafted.
Catcher Cody Roberts was selected in the 38th round by the Miami Marlins, while infielder Zack Gahagan was a 39th-round selection of the Cincinnati Reds.
These choices came nearly two full days after teammates JB Bukauskas, Logan Warmoth and Brian Miller were each picked in the first round–meaning nearly 37 rounds went by without a single Tar Heel being drafted.
It was the 12th time in 19 seasons under head coach Mike Fox, however, that at least five Tar Heels were chosen.
Roberts hit .268 with 11 doubles and 27 RBIs as a sophomore this past season, as he also flashed an impressive arm behind the plate.
He will likely join Miller in the Marlins’ farm system should he choose to sign with the pro club instead of returning to school.
Gahagan, meanwhile, played all over the infield this season and tied for second on the team with seven home runs. A starter for most of his three seasons in Chapel Hill, Gahagan also hit nine doubles and stole six bases in 2017.
