UNC junior Chazz Surratt is making an interesting decision this offseason, as the UNC football team opens spring practice.

The former highly-regarded quarterback recruit is switching from offense to defense, looking to become the Tar Heels’ newest outside linebacker.

A picture posted on Twitter by Lee Pace Tuesday show that the 6-foot-3 Surratt has been bulking up in the weight room–appearing significantly bigger than the 216 pounds he is listed at by the school.

Playing time would have likely been hard to come by at quarterback this year for Surratt, with incoming freshman Sam Howell expected to compete with sophomores Cade Fortin and Jace Ruder for the job.

Surratt played in nine games at quarterback as a redshirt freshman in 2017, completing 58.5 percent of his passes for 1,342 yards, eight touchdowns and just three interceptions. He also ran the ball 85 times for 210 yards and five touchdowns.

In 2018, however, he began the year on the bench behind Nathan Elliott but finally got in on the action when the Tar Heels traveled to face Miami in a Thursday night prime-time game that they would end up losing 47-10.

Surratt broke his wrist early on against the Hurricanes–an injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season–after a poor start where he completed four of his 10 passes for 10 yards and three interception and carried the ball nine times for 69 yards and a touchdown.
