UNC senior linebacker Chazz Surratt was named to the Bednarik Award Watch List on Tuesday, just weeks after being named a Preseason First Team All-American by Street & Smith’s magazine.
The Bednarik Award has been given out by the Maxwell Football Club each year since 1995, and honors the College Defensive Player of the Year.
After playing quarterback during his first two years for the Tar Heels, Surratt made the transition to linebacker prior to last season and immediately began making his presence felt on that side of the ball. He finished the 2019 season with a team-high 115 tackles to go along with 6.5 sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery.
Julius Peppers is the only Tar Heel to ever win the Bednarik Award, doing so back in 2001.
The ACC leads all conferences this season with a total of 18 players on the Bednarik Award Watch List.
