The ninth-ranked UNC men’s basketball team suffered a huge blow on Wednesday when it was announced guard Cameron Johnson was having surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

He is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Johnson–a 6-foot-7 graduate transfer who came to Chapel Hill from Pittsburgh–suffered the injury in practice on Monday, according to a statement released by the university.

This news comes after Johnson missed UNC’s season opener against Northern Iowa with a sprained neck, an ailment that was not related to the knee injury.

“I’m extremely disappointed for Cameron,” head coach Roy Williams said. “The young man has been working hard to blend in with our team after being such a productive college player the last two-plus seasons.”

Johnson’s outside shooting ability and lanky body seemed like it would provide the team with a natural replacement on the wing for the recently departed Justin Jackson.

After starting every game last season for Pittsburgh–a year in which he averaged 11.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per outing–Johnson was expected to play a big role for the Tar Heels on the perimeter.

In addition to Johnson, the Tar Heels will also be without sophomore guard Brandon Robinson–who sprained his right shoulder last Friday in the win over Northern Iowa–for Wednesday’s game against Bucknell.
