The first year of the Hubert Davis Era in Chapel Hill now has its complete roadmap. The full conference schedule for the Carolina men’s basketball team was revealed Thursday night in a special on the ACC Network. The team had previously revealed its non-conference schedule in July.
The team will be officially introduced to fans at Late Night festivities on October 15, before playing an exhibition with Elizabeth City State on November 5 and opening the regular season four days later against Loyola.
Notable non-conference games include Purdue in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament, to be played the week before Thanksgiving in Uncasville, CT. The winner of that game will play either Villanova or Tennessee the next day. Purdue and Villanova both finished the 2020-21 season ranked in the final AP Poll.
UNC will host Michigan in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge on December 1. It will be the fourth time the teams have met in the last five seasons, with the Wolverines winning two of the previous three games.
Four days later, UNC will get open its ACC season on the road against Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets defeated Carolina in Atlanta last season, and have won three straight games against the Tar Heels. Four more non-conference games will follow the game against Georgia Tech, the most notable being a neutral-site matchup against UCLA. The Bruins competed in last season’s Final Four, and ESPN projects them to be a Top 5 team this year.
Notable games within the ACC season include a home game with Virginia on January 8. Carolina hasn’t beaten the Cavaliers on the basketball court since 2017. NC State visits on January 29, and Carolina will head over to Raleigh on February 26.
And of course, the Tar Heels will play two games against Duke, with the first hosted by Carolina on February 5. That will be Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s last visit to the Dean Smith Center before his retirement after the season. Krzyzewski’s last home game as coach will come against UNC on March 5. It will be both teams’ last game of the regular season.
