The final pieces of the scheduling puzzle for UNC’s basketball programs fell into place on Tuesday, as the Atlantic Coast Conference released the schedules for 2023-24 conference play.
The Carolina men’s and women’s teams joined the other 14 teams in seeing their schedules revealed during an ACC Network special Tuesday night, rounding out their games after having learned of non-conference opponents through individual announcements earlier in the year.
For UNC men’s basketball, their first game begins relatively early in the season schedule: Saturday, December 2, as Carolina hosts Florida State. While the game opens ACC play, it falls between two high-profile non-conference games: Tennessee at home for the ACC-SEC Challenge and the defending champions UConn in Madison Square Garden for the Jimmy V Classic.
The Tar Heels will begin facing conference opponents in earnest at the start of 2024, as they are slated for a trio of road games to open January. Hubert Davis’ team will travel to face Pitt on Tuesday, January 2, before facing Clemson on Saturday, January 6, and then N.C. State on Wednesday, January 10.
The Wolfpack and Tigers are two of the six ACC opponents the Tar Heels will play home-and-homes against. UNC’s rival Duke Blue Devils are among that group — with this year’s matchups falling on Saturday, February 3 for the home game in the Dean Smith Center and Saturday, March 9 for the away game in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Carolina will also face Florida State, Miami and Syracuse twice during the regular season.

Of the eight remaining teams they just play once, Carolina will travel to play just two teams who finished above them in the 2022-23 season standings: Pitt and Virginia, who the Tar Heels will face on Saturday, February 24. That latter matchup comes after a week-long break for the Tar Heels compared to three-day turnarounds during the 2022-23 regular season, which UNC split with the Cavaliers.
The road trip to Charlottesville will come as teams’ NCAA Tournament résumés are shaping up — and Carolina will have an opportunity to do that with three consecutive home games before the regular season finale at Duke. UNC will host Miami on Monday, February 26, before playing N.C. State on Saturday, March 2, and then facing Notre Dame on Tuesday, March 5.

Meanwhile, the UNC women’s basketball team will see their ACC play begin on the final day of the calendar year, as they host Clemson on Sunday, December 31. Carolina will follow that with another home game against Syracuse on Thursday, January 4 before hitting the road to play the ACC’s regular-season champions last year: Notre Dame on Sunday, January 7.

For the women’s program, the teams they face twice in conference play are all expected to once again have strong seasons: Virginia Tech, Duke, and N.C. State. The Wolfpack will face the Heels in Reynolds Coliseum on Thursday, February 1 before traveling to Carmichael Arena for a rematch on Thursday, February 22. Carolina will first host the Hokies — who are coming off a Final Four appearance and ACC Tournament title — on Sunday, February 4 before heading to Blacksburg on Sunday, February 25 for the away frame. The rivalry between the Tar Heels and Blue Devils will be renewed during an away game for UNC on Sunday, February 11 before Duke travels to Chapel Hill for Carolina’s Senior Night on Sunday, March 3.
The Tar Heels also drew two prominent home games against teams who finished above them in the 2022-23 standings: Louisville — who will play in Chapel Hill on Sunday, January 21 — and Miami four days later on Thursday, January 25.
The women’s program’s non-conference schedule garnered much attention over the summer, as it was announced they would not only be hosting South Carolina for the ACC-SEC Challenge on November 30, but traveling to Connecticut to take on UConn in the Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase on December 10 and facing Oklahoma in the second annual Jumpman Invitational. Courtney Banghart’s program will tip off the season on November 8 with a home game against Gardner-Webb.
