Through an up-and-down 2021 football season, one thing remained constant for UNC: some good-looking uniforms. Carolina has often been cited as having some of the best jersey combinations in the country, and this week one particular set was recognized as the best in the country. The Twitter page Uniform Authority named UNC’s 1990s throwback uniforms its Best Throwback Uniform of 2021.

The Tar Heels busted out the throwbacks for two games in the 2021 season: a win against Virginia in Kenan Stadium and the Duke’s Mayo Bowl loss to South Carolina. The throwback uniforms, originally worn by the team during the 1990s in head coach Mack Brown’s first tenure with the program, were reintroduced in 2020. Carolina also wore them for two games that season, including the Orange Bowl against Texas A&M.

The jerseys, featuring a navy-and-white shoulder stripe and an exaggerated drop shadow on the numbers, seem to be popular among the fanbase, with some even calling for them to replace the normal argyle jerseys as the full-time uniform for the team. Brown has said in the past that individual game uniforms are decided by the players, so it remains to be seen when and where Carolina will break out the throwbacks in the 2022 season. UNC’s full regular season schedule is set to be announced on January 31.
