UNCโs Fiona Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty may have never played a single point together as a doubles team before October, but now they may make the arrangement permanent.
Crawley and Scotty topped the final ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings of 2021 this week as the No. 1 doubles team in the country. The pair went 10-0 as partners this year, and in November became just the second doubles team in Carolina history to win the ITA Fall National Championship.
Scotty, a junior, had previously played alongside Makenna Jones at Carolina. The two won the NCAA Doubles Championship in May before Jones graduated.
Crawley, a sophomore, was named the ITA Carolina Region Rookie of the Year during her freshman season, and appeared on the NCAA Team Championship All-Tournament Team.
Just below Scotty and Crawley in the rankings are the team of Cameron Morra and Reilly Tran, who appeared at No. 6. Morra and Tran both also appeared in the year-end singles rankings as well, at No. 5 and No. 7, respectively. To view the full ITA rankings, click here.
The UNC womenโs tennis program wonโt compete again until the new year, when they host the Tar Heel Invite from January 7 through January 9. Though the team has experienced great success in the ITA circuit, the Tar Heels are still in search of their first NCAA team championship in program history. Carolina reached the national semifinals in last seasonโs tournament before falling to Pepperdine.
