Starting pitcher Aidan Haugh struck out a career-high 10 batters to help the Diamond Heels win 6-3 at East Carolina Monday evening and complete a three-game sweep of the Pirates. It’s the first time in program history UNC has swept ECU in a three-game, weekend series.
Haugh earned his first win of the season by lasting five innings while allowing two runs on four hits. He got support from a three-run top of the second inning, which saw Hunter Stokely lead things off with his second home run of the season to tie the game at 1-1. After a Rom Kellis single and Sam Angelo walk, Jackson Van De Brake brought Kellis home with a single and Gavin Gallaher scored Angelo on an RBI groundout to give UNC a 3-1 lead.
ECU got a run back in the third, but Carolina answered with two in the fourth, as Alex Madera scored Angelo on a sacrifice fly and Gallaher scored on a wild pitch. Luke Stevenson added UNC’s sixth run of the game in the sixth inning on an RBI single.
Camron Seagraves relieved Haugh on the mound, keeping the Pirates off the scoreboard for 1.1 innings. Matthew Matthijs, pitching in his hometown of Greenville, recorded the final eight outs to earn his second save of the season and complete the UNC sweep.
The win improves Carolina to 7-0 on the season. It’s UNC’s best start since 2017. The Diamond Heels will look to continue the winning streak when they host VCU at Boshamer Stadium Tuesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
