The Diamond Heels suffered their first loss of 2022 Sunday night in Greenville, dropping the last of a three-game series with East Carolina, 5-0. However, thanks to the team’s two wins at Boshamer Stadium earlier in the weekend, Carolina still won the overall series.

ECU capitalized on several UNC miscues to score its first run in the bottom of the second inning. Errors by shortstop Danny Serretti and Colby Wilkerson allowed a Pirate runner to advance to third base with one out, before he scored on a wild pitch from starter Shaddon Peavyhouse.

That run would be all the Pirates needed Sunday night, as Carolina’s bats fell silent. The Tar Heels managed just four hits on the evening, and none from its 7-8-9 hitters. Freshman Vance Honeycutt reached base twice with a hit and a walk, but missed opportunities stung Carolina in the end. The Tar Heels left nine runners on base, including striking out twice with the bases loaded to end the game in the top of the ninth.

On the mound, no Carolina pitcher went more than three innings. Peavyhouse, who took the loss, was pulled after the third. Kyle Mott, Shawn Rapp, Connor Bovair, Gage Gillian and Connor Ollio all followed in relief, though none managed to last more than an inning and a third.

Despite the loss, UNC is still an impressive 6-1 to start the season. The team will return to Chapel Hill for a five-game homestand at Boshamer Stadium this week, beginning with a Tuesday matchup with Longwood at 4 p.m.
