The UNC baseball team lost for the 11th time in 15 games Sunday against Georgia Tech, falling 11-8 to the Yellow Jackets. It’s the fourth straight series loss for the Tar Heels, who are now just 22-14 after an 18-3 start.
The Tar Heels fell behind 5-0 after the top of the third inning and never recovered. A Georgia Tech grand slam in the second opened the scoring, with another solo shot in the third putting the lead at five runs. Carolina sliced the deficit down to one run twice, once in the fifth on a two-RBI single from Hunter Stokely and then again in the eighth on a two-run home run from Alberto Osuna, but were never able to tie the game.
The Yellow Jackets hit their second grand slam of the afternoon in the top of the ninth, and those four runs would prove vital as Carolina got two in the bottom of the ninth on a Vance Honeycutt home run. Had Carolina held Georgia Tech scoreless in the ninth, Honeycutt’s blast would have been a walk-off.
As has been the case recently, multiple UNC pitchers struggled on the day. Connor Bovair got the start but only pitched into the second inning, allowing three runs while recording just three outs. Kyle Mott, Gage Gillian and Davis Palermo each also gave up runs in their brief appearances, and Caden O’Brien allowed Tech’s grand slam in the ninth without recording a single out.
Carolina now stands at just 8-10 in conference play with four ACC series left to go in the regular season. The Tar Heels will host Campbell at Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday before their most challenging road trip of the season this weekend: a visit to No. 11 Virginia.
