Three Carolina relievers combined to toss five scoreless innings in the second game of the team’s weekend series against Louisville, and the Diamond Heels took a 6-4 win.
Matt Poston earned his third win of the season with 2.2 one-hit innings, coming in after starter Shea Sprague allowed a go-ahead three-run home run in the fourth and walked the leadoff hitter in the fifth. Poston lasted into the seventh inning, when Ben Peterson got the call to record the frame’s final out with the go-ahead run on first base. He did just that, then yielded to Dalton Pence for the game’s final six outs. Pence recorded them all – half by way of the strikeout – to earn his sixth save.
At the plate, Carolina’s top four hitters combined for eight of the team’s 11 hits. New school home run king Vance Honeycutt recorded two, driving in UNC’s sixth run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. He came around to score the first run of the day on an Anthony Donofrio single in the first, then did so again on a fielder’s choice in the fourth, part of a two-run inning which gave Carolina the lead back after Louisville’s three-run blast. Casey Cook (solo home run) and Parks Harber (bases-loaded walk) recorded the other two Tar Heel RBIs.
The win improves Carolina to 38-11 overall, 31-2 at home and 19-7 in ACC play – a record number of regular-season league wins under head coach Scott Forbes. The Diamond Heels will go for the sweep against the Cardinals on Sunday at noon.
