Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen–who starred at UNC from 2014-16–made history on Tuesday night after allowing just two runs on seven hits during his seven innings on the mound.

Over his first 19 career games in the major leagues–all of which have been starts–Gallen has yet to allow more than three earned runs, which breaks the National League record previously set by Steve Rogers of the Montreal Expos over the 1973 and 1974 seasons.

The major league record is 21 straight games to begin a career held by Aaron Sele, who accomplished the feat in the American League as a member of the Boston Red Sox from 1993-1994.

Gallen was a third-round draft choice by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016, but was traded to the Miami Marlins before ever making it to the major league roster.

Arizona then made a move for Gallen prior to the trade deadline during the 2019 season, and has watched him bloom into a big-time performer at the game’s highest level.

Through 80 career innings in the majors, Gallen has a 2.80 ERA and has struck out 96 batters. Across that same time frame, opposing teams have logged only 62 hits.
