As the NBA head coaching carousel continues to spin, the Detroit Pistons–who recently let go of former coach Stan Van Gundy–have plans to interview former UNC standout, and current NBA analyst on TNT, Kenny “The Jet” Smith for the position.

Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports reported the news on Wednesday.

The Pistons made a splash this season by trading for All-Star forward Blake Griffin, but still barely missed the playoffs in the Eastern Conference by going 39-43.

Smith was an All-American as a guard at UNC before going on to win two NBA championships as a member of the Houston Rockets in 1994 and 1995.

An analyst with Turner Sports since 1998, Smith has no prior coaching experience–but he did interview for the New York Knicks job last month.

His son, K.J., is currently a member of the UNC men’s basketball team after transferring from Pacific University. The younger Smith will be eligible to play for the Tar Heels next season.
