The MLB trade deadline came and went on Wednesday, with a pair of former Tar Heel teammates–right-handed starting pitchers Zac Gallen and JB Bukauskas–each ending up getting moved to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Gallen had just recently made his major league debut with the Miami Marlins, starting seven games so far for the last place team in the National League East division. In those games, the former third-round pick in 2016 has posted a 1-3 record with a 2.72 ERA across 26.1 innings pitched.

Prior to getting called up to the big leagues, Gallen was among the top pitchers at the Triple-A level–earning three Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week honors early in the season.

He was traded for Double-A shortstop Jazz Chisholm, who was ranked as the top prospect in Arizona’s organization.

Bukauskas, meanwhile, was sent to Arizona as one of four top minor leaguers sent by the Houston Astros in exchange for future Hall-of-Fame pitcher Zack Greinke.

The flame-throwing righty was Houston’s first round draft choice back in 2017, although he has yet to advance further than the Double-A level. In 20 appearances this season for the Corpus Christi Hooks, Bukauskas has a 2-4 record with a 5.25 ERA.

During the 2016 college baseball season, Gallen and Bukauskas were the top two starting pitchers for UNC.
