Diamond Heels standout Gavin Gallaher will join a list of MLB legends and All-Stars at the “Home Run Derby X” at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown Durham this August. The event, which is returning to Durham for a second straight year, is scheduled for Saturday, August 9 at 7 p.m.
Among the featured participants in the event are several former household names from MLB, such as Andruw Jones of the Atlanta Braves, Manny Ramirez of the Boston Red Sox, Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals and Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs. Gavin Gallaher is one of several college players from local schools who will participate, as well as Duke’s Macon Winslow, NC State’s Chris McHugh and ECU’s Colby Wallace.
In Home Run Derby X, the participants are divided up into teams of three. Each player on a team gets one at-bat lasting 2:30. During that at-bat, the opposing team will man the outfield trying to catch batted balls. Teams earn offensive points for home runs and defensive points for catches. Bonus points are earned by hitting home runs through a target in center field. Batters can also call for a “hot streak” of five swings where every point is doubled, or can tag in a teammate during the final minute of an at-bat. Whoever has the most points at the end of the game, which usually lasts about 30 minutes, wins.
