An issue with lights inside Boshamer Stadium forced the early ending of a UNC baseball game Tuesday night. Carolina was in the middle of a game with Western Carolina when the issue began. However, due to at least 4.5 innings having already been played, the game was past the threshold to be called early.

Because of that, the Diamond Heels got their 10th win of the season, 8-4 in five innings.

The Tar Heels and Catamounts had gone back-and-forth for the preceding five innings. Western Carolina took an early 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and a 3-2 lead in the top of the second. UNC then scored four runs across the third and fourth innings, with Alberto Osuna and Honeycutt each going deep.

Honeycutt has homered in five of his last seven games after not going deep in Carolina’s first six games of the season. The star sophomore’s .636 slugging percentage ranks third on the team among players who have started all 13 games. Honeycutt is also one of four Tar Heels with at least 10 games under their belt with an OPS higher than 1.000.

On the mound, reliever Nelson Berkwich was awarded what will likely the the shortest win of his baseball career. Berkwich came out of the bullpen to get the final out of the top of the fifth inning, and because of that became the pitcher of record when the game was called. It was the first win of the season for the junior transfer from Vanderbilt.

Due to the light issue, Carolina’s Wednesday home game against Penn State has been moved up to a 1:30 p.m. first pitch.
