For the second time this season, the top-ranked UNC field hockey team lost in sudden-death overtime in Chapel Hill. This time, No. 10 Liberty stood firm against an offensive onslaught in the extra session before putting home the winning goal after 72 minutes of field hockey.

Carolina took an early lead after Kiersten Thomassey scored her fourth goal of the season midway through the first quarter, but did not find the back of the cage again. Liberty evened the score with 44 seconds remaining before halftime, and the scoring promptly dried up until the Flames’ double-overtime winner.

Carolina put constant pressure on the Flame cage with 17 total shots on the day, including eight in the fourth quarter and overtime periods combined. UNC also took 12 penalty corners to just four for Liberty. Four of Carolina’s penalty corners came in the first overtime period, and the Tar Heels added another in double overtime before Liberty’s goal.

The Flames have now won two straight games at Karen Shelton Stadium, and have accounted for half of the Tar Heels’ four all-time losses at the venue. Carolina will be back in action on Friday when it visits No. 12 Syracuse.
