For the second time this season, a tying goal in the final two minutes turned what would have been a win for the top-ranked UNC women’s soccer team into a tie. Carolina led 1-0 in the 89th minute at No. 22 Duke but had to head home with a 1-1 draw after drama at the end.
The two teams were evenly-matched all day, as the Tar Heels and Blue Devils finished even in shots (10-10), shots on goal (5-5) and saves (4-4). The score was deadlocked at 0-0 at halftime before Emily Colton fired UNC in front in the 59th minute. Carolina had a chance to double that lead 20 minutes later after a Duke foul in the box, but Avery Patterson’s penalty kick was saved to keep the score 1-0. That save proved to be Duke’s salvation when Kat Rader scored with 60 seconds remaining.
No. 1 UNC is still undefeated at 9-0-5 overall and 4-0-2 in conference play, though no doubt frustrated after letting another late lead slip away. The Tar Heels will stay on the road for their next matchup at No. 17 Wake Forest on Friday at 7 p.m.
