UNC allowed the tying and go-ahead goals in a span of 3:03 in the third quarter vs. No. 11 Iowa Sunday, and the Hawkeyes held that onto that lead to deal the Tar Heels a 3-2 loss. It’s Carolina’s second consecutive loss to open the 2026 season.
The Tar Heels led 2-1 at halftime on the strength of a first-quarter goal from Sofia Ferri and a second-quarter goal from Molly Catchpole. UNC had built hat lead on the strength of a commanding advantage in possession; Carolina outshot Iowa 17-2 in the first 30 minutes. But the Hawkeyes turned up the heat after halftime, evening up shots 8-8 in the second half. UNC’s eight total shots in the final 30 minutes came after the Tar Heels had totaled 12 in the second quarter alone.
Carolina had several chances to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but Iowa goalie Abby Johnson made four of her nine saves in the final 15 minutes to preserve the Hawkeye lead.
The loss drops UNC to 0-2 on the season. This is the first time the Tar Heels have lost consecutive games to open a season since 2021. Carolina will be back in action in its home opener Friday, Sep. 4 vs. Penn at 6 p.m. at Karen Shelton Stadium.
