History continued to repeat itself for Coach Ryan Horton and Chapel Hill High School during Friday night’s football game against Carrboro High School, winning 35-12 on the road. They extended their winning streak against the home team to five games, dating back to the 2019 season. 2018 or 2020 did not include a contest between the two schools.
“It feels good, you always wanna feel validated for how hard you work and the good team of coaches and players around you,” Chapel Hill High Head Coach Ryan Horton said. “Be represented in wins and that wasn’t happening but it did tonight, so it feels good.”
The Tigers began 2024 with three straight losses against Southern High School, Orange High School and Southern Alamance High School. Over that time span they gave up 107 points and lost two quarterbacks in junior Samuel Zimmermann and senior Jonah Berman — Horton had to move his senior running back Josh Roberson underneath center.
Roberson continued his ground game that was evident in Week 2 against Orange High School, a quarterback keeper near the Jaguars end zone during the fourth quarter and a touchdown pass from Carrboro’s 22-yard line to open up the game’s scoring led to a successful night. On top of throwing the ball, he used his feet to rush into the end zone during the fourth quarter.
“It feels amazing after being down 0-3,” Roberson said. “We just came and played hard — we got a hard week next week and we just got to prepare — come ready next week and fight all game.”
Despite playing out of position, Roberson managed his team and was able to progress at the quarterback position.
“Pretty good, I made some mistakes on some plays but I definitely think I did pretty good,” he added. “I just gotta keep watching film and keep getting better at doing what I’m doing — we’re going to get there.”
Besides Roberson, his fellow senior teammates wide receiver Tyler Oliaro and running back Tyler Jackson had productive nights, too.
Oliaro was on the other end of Roberson’ pass in the first quarter and ran for a 40-yard touchdown later on in the second on a reverse play.
“It feels good, a little hard — no quarterbacks but we pieced stuff together and we finally got stuff done,” Oliaro said. “I was happy with my performance — two touchdowns, felt good to get in the end zone.”
Jackson found the end zone using his legs during the second and fourth quarter, featuring a 35-yard run.
“Tough three [games], good to get a first dub,” Jackson said. “It’s going to get tougher, so we have to pick up in the beginning because we played pretty trash — we gotta pick up throughout the whole game.”
Regardless of how the season started for the Tigers and how well Carrboro High School was performing, Chapel Hill High School captured their first win in football.
The Jaguars were on the verge of stretching their winning streak to three games after losing their first contest of the season to Montgomery Central High School by a score of 34-6. Following that game, they scored a combined 66 points while holding Jordan-Matthews High School scoreless during Week 2 and East Chapel Hill High School to 14 points in Week 3.
Coach Ken Lathan’s senior quarterback Tyler Pease threw to senior wide receiver Marcus Sharpe Jr. on two different occasions for a touchdown — during the first and fourth quarter. However, that was all Carrboro could muster against the Tigers.
Due to an unfortunate injury for Carrboro High School, the contest was called off with 4:39 remaining in the fourth quarter.
August 31, 2017 was the last time Carrboro High School were victorious over the Tigers as the game ended in double overtime — the Jaguars won by a score of 21-20 on the road.
The Jaguars are now 2-2 and will head into their next matchup at home against Louisburg High School next Friday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m.
Coach Horton and his Tigers will host the number one team in North Carolina High School football during Week 5 — Weddington High School. The game will be on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
The Warriors are ranked 42 nationally and currently hold a 4-0 record with wins over Providence Day High School, Ardrey Kell High School, West Forsyth High School and Butler High School.
“We [have] got a lot of guys with a lot of experience, we got good athletes,” Horton said of next week’s matchup and the rest of the season. “Our expectations at the beginning of the year were very high, we’ve gone through some injuries but I think we’re kind of finding our way through it. I think those expectations are still intact.”
