In a matchup of cross-town rivals (and big cats), it was the Chapel Hill High Tigers who ruled as kings of the jungle Friday night in a 55-6 rout of the rival Carrboro High Jaguars.

Chapel Hill wasted no time in lighting up the scoreboard, with quarterback Caleb Kelley connecting with receiver Ameer Burman for a long touchdown pass on the Tigers’ first play from scrimmage. After a Carrboro punt, Chapel Hill scored on their first play from scrimmage on the ensuing drive, this time a run from Cayden Forbes. Two plays, two touchdowns, and a 13-0 lead in under two minutes. Talk about setting the tone!

Chapel Hill added one more first quarter touchdown for good measure, a score from star running back Elijah Ayankoya with a little over five minutes remaining.

Carrboro got one of the scores back, capitalizing on a fumble from Kelley with a touchdown pass from Calvin Martin to Elijah Feaster. But Chapel Hill answered just 11 seconds later, with Ayankoya finding the end zone for the second time on a long, punishing run in which he shed Jaguar defenders like water. Ayankoya would complete his hat trick later in the quarter, scoring his third touchdown in just under 18 minutes of game time.

Another score from big Jamazia Williams (normally a defensive tackle) put the cherry on top of a dominant first half for the Tigers. After two quarters, they led the Jaguars, 41-6.

Forbes scored his second touchdown of the evening early in the third, after which the programs instituted a running clock. But that didn’t stop the Tigers from adding one more touchdown for good measure, a run from back-up running back Jaylen Cotton. It was yet another long score through a tired Jaguar defense.

Eight touchdowns and 55 points made for a fun Friday night for the hosts in Chapel Hill. Adding to the celebration was the Tigers’ starting safety: Brooklyn Harker, who is the first female athlete to ever suit up for the Chapel Hill football program.

The Tigers will again be at home next week, hosting Person High School before another rivalry showdown on the road at East Chapel Hill High on Friday, September 24. Carrboro will be on the road again next week, visiting Trinity High in Randolph County.
