The ACC announced its 2017 Football Legends Class on Tuesday, with former linebacker Brian Simmons serving as UNC’s representative in the 14-member group.
Each of the league’s 14 schools had someone selected, with each legend scheduled to be honored at both the ACC Night of Legends in Charlotte on Friday, Dec. 1 and then on the field at Bank of America Stadium during pre-game festivities at the ACC Championship Game the very next night.
Simmons–who played at UNC from 1994-1997–was a consensus First Team All-American as a senior under head coach Mack Brown. He was then selected with the 17th overall pick in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.
The New Bern native would ultimately play 10 seasons in the NFL, nine with the Bengals and his final year with the New Orleans Saints.
Other notable members of the 2017 ACC Legends Class include: Boston College quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, longtime Duke broadcaster Bob Harris, Georgia Tech linebacker Keith Brooking, Syracuse running back Tom Coughlin and Miami safety Bennie Blades.
