Film Fest 919, which introduced films to this market in 2018 that won seven OSCARS, opens on Wednesday, October 9, with a 7 p.m. showing of Marriage Story, starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. It will be followed be a party at City Kitchen, hosted by Sally Brown, wife of UNC football coach Mack Brown, with local favorite Liquid Pleasure providing the entertainment.

On Thursday night at 6 p.m. will be a special encore showing of Rocketman, which will be followed by remarks from Ray Williams, who discovered Elton John and introduced him to John’s long-time lyricist Bernie Taubin.

Friday’s lineup is highlighted by the first of two screenings of Ford v. Ferrari, starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale. On Saturday, the 6 p.m. showing of The Two Popes will be preceded by a special presentation to director and three-time Academy Award winner Anthony McCarten. Film Fest 919’s closing film Sunday evening is JoJo Rabbit, the acclaimed World War II satire.

Special events include Offscreen: Interactive Student Symposium: College students from around the state of NC will see films, have meet and greet discussions with filmmakers and industry professions and a MEET THE ARTIST presentation by Joe Letteri of Weta Digital, one of the leading special-effects companies in the world.

Other films already being tabbed as award candidates are comedy-drama Dolemite Is My Name, starring Eddie Murphy; Pain and Glory (starring Antonio Banderas, who is already receiving Best Actor mentions); The Report, Waves, Clemency, Honey Boy, Just Mercy and The King. International submissions include: Italy – The Traitor; Mexico – The Chambermaid; Russia – Beanpole; South Korea – Parasite; and Spain – Pain and Glory.
