Only four universities ranked ahead of UNC in the latest edition of The Princeton Review’s “Best Value Colleges.”

Of the 650 academic institutions ranked by The Princeton Review, Carolina checked in at fifth among public universities. The institutions are ranked on 40 points of data — such as affordability, career preparation and academic rigor. Scholarships play a significant part of the affordability factor.

“The colleges that we designate as our ‘Best Values’ this year are truly a select group: they comprise only about 1.2% of the four-year undergraduate institutions in the U.S.,” said Rob Franek, editor-in-chief of The Princeton Review in a release.

The four universities ranked ahead of UNC among “Best Value Colleges” are University of California-Berkeley, University of Virginia, Georgia Institute of Technology and University of California-San Diego.

UNC ranked second on the list of public institutions for financial aid and fifth among best value public colleges for students with no demonstrated financial need. In addition, UNC ranked eighth among public universities for making an impact.

This new ranking from The Princeton Review comes after UNC was listed as the top large university in the southern United States, according to the 2021 Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings. In addition, the newspapers’ ranking also listed UNC as the third best public university in the country and 33rd best overall.
