****UPDATE: UNC has since banned all university-affiliated travel outside of North Carolina in addition to extending spring break and preparing for remote classes.****
In an update on March 2, UNC confirmed that it has also banned nonessential university-affiliated travel to South Korea and Italy amid the outbreak of coronavirus.
This includes the cancellation of all spring 2020 semester study abroad programs in South Korea and Italy.
The university also said it is communicating with affected students studying abroad in South Korea about their return to the United States and their academic continuation options. At this time, there are no changes to the summer or fall 2020 study abroad programs.
UNC has banned nonessential university-affiliated travel to China amid the outbreak of coronavirus, which has spread from the city of Wuhan in the Hubei Province.
This comes after the U.S. Department of State issued a Level 3: Reconsider Travel advisory for China that includes a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory for the Hubei Province. Additionally, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a Warning – Level 3: Avoid Nonessential Travel advisory for China.
UNC personnel looking to travel to China must contact Andrew Hunt, global operations specialist, to initiate further review and approval.
The Orange County Health Department also issued information about coronavirus and emphasized that there are no confirmed cases in North Carolina at the time of publishing. A passenger traveling through RDU was suspected of carrying the virus, but tested negative by state health officials.
Symptoms of coronavirus include fever and lower respiratory illness (e.g., cough, difficulty breathing). The illness can be more serious for individuals with a weakened immune system, the elderly, or those with underlying respiratory problems.
All Orange County medical personnel and first responders have been informed about the coronavirus and have put in place a protocol to ensure the public’s safety, should Orange County encounter a case.
