A large, 150-year-old tree fell on UNC’s campus Wednesday morning at McCorkle Place amid heavy wind and rain.
The tree collapsed near the entrance of Alumni Hall, a building that holds Anthropology and Archaeology department. It’s located close to where the Confederate monument Silent Sam once stood and to the Old Well. No damage to the building is apparent.
Crews set up traffic cones to block any pedestrians using the pathways between East Franklin Street and Cameron Avenue.
UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz posted on Twitter following the incident thanking UNC grounds crews for their work on securing the area.
High winds and saturated ground brought down a 150 year-old tree on McCorkle Place early this morning. I went out to thank Tom Bythell (a Massey award winner!) and our incredible grounds team for their quick response. pic.twitter.com/iTEHw5trTs
