Candidate for the Democratic nomination for president Elizabeth Warren voiced her opinion on the UNC System Board of Governors’ recent settlement with a pro-Confederate group.
The senator from Massachusetts tweeted Wednesday afternoon, addressing both the board and the North Carolina Republican legislators who appoint the governors. She said public funds should be put towards the students of UNC-Chapel Hill instead of paying the Sons of Confederate Veterans in a settlement. Warren was referencing the Board of Governor’s creation of a $2.5 million trust meant for the preservation and display of the Confederate statue known as Silent Sam.
Shame on the UNC Board of Governors—and the Republican legislators who used a power grab to appoint this radical board. Public funds should be used for students, not paying off Confederate groups.https://t.co/ooa6ej53Zc

The settlement, which was revealed minutes after the SCV filed its lawsuit in November, cedes possession of the statue to the SCV under the condition it is not returned to any UNC System campus. Five members of the Board of Governors defended the settlement in a piece published on Monday.
Warren is slated to participate in the Democratic presidential primary debate on Thursday night.
