A COVID-19 cluster has been reported at the Morrison Residence Hall on UNC’s campus — the second cluster of cases since spring classes began on January 19 and the third in the new year.

A “cluster” is defined by health officials as a five or more cases that are deemed close proximity in location. “Location” is defined as a single residential hall or dwelling with plausible epidemiological link between cases.

This is the third cluster of cases reported at UNC in 2021. A cluster of cases was reported at Carmichael Residence Hall on January 13, which was attributed to a group of students who had lived on campus over winter break. On January 29, a cluster was reported at Avery Residence Hall.

There have been 322 total positive cases of COVID-19 among UNC students living in the Chapel Hill community since January 13, the first day that students could move in to on-campus residence halls.

Under UNC’s new testing program, asymptomatic students living in Chapel Hill or Carrboro are required to get tested once per week at one of three UNC testing locations. Students living on campus or taking in person courses will need to be tested twice per week.

According to UNC’s COVID-19 dashboard, the number of cases in the cluster at Avery Residence Hall has increased to seven. The dashboard and the number of cases at the Morrison Residence Hall cluster will be updated later on Tuesday.

UNC is currently reporting a positivity rate of 0.9% for cumulative on-campus testing since January 2021.
