UNC Police are responding to a safety threat at Kenan Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

The university shared an Alert Carolina message at 3:55 p.m. to the UNC campus community and beyond, saying an investigation is ongoing and people are asked to avoid the area. A follow-up alert was shared an hour later, saying the investigation is still ongoing and people should continue to detour the football stadium.

No further information is being made publicly available as of 5 p.m. — but the severity of the alert was listed as “extreme” and the response urgency was listed as “immediate” on the Carolina Ready app.

The main road access to Kenan Stadium is Stadium Drive, which is meant for limited vehicle traffic since it primarily consists of parking. Drivers detouring the area may want to avoid South Road, Stone Center Drive and Bell Tower Drive. An alert by UNC Health told employees that anyone with a Bell Tower Parking Deck permit is asked to move their vehicles to any other available parking deck.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
